starter relay?

#1

Post by 65 pn hd » Fri Jul 01, 2005 2:49 am

I'm rebuilding my'65 pan . I 've noticed from pictures a small rectangular piece right below the battery. It almost looks like a small voltage regulator. My bike never had this piece, but worked fine. I was told it might be a starter relay. I looked in my wiring diagram and it shows nothing. So even if I get one I would not know how to wire it up. Does anyone know what it is and how to wire it up. I've been trying to somewhat put this bike back to stock. Great site with great info.

Thanks, Beau

Production '65s (and atleast through the first part of '66) had no relays.

America was four years away from putting a man on the moon, yet HD couldn't fathom the notion of a relay, and ran the power to the solenoid through the handlebar switch for the first handwarmer! (Duh.)

If your battery tray is "correct", it will not have a tab for a relay, so the early Delco-Remy style can be held upon a kickercover stud, and then wired like the later wiring diagram in the manual.

It will service longer and stronger,...but an AMCA judge will 'ding' you for it.
