1958 tail light lens

I hope one of you guys can give me a definate answers ...I've searched the net.....I've checked Palmer's book, but I'm getting conflicting information...

I have a 1958 Duo-glide, in the tail light, both the red and clear lens are plastic...is this correct ?

If I need to get a red glass lens, I understand that the Chevy panel (1940's) truck lens will fit...I know the part nrs are different, but is the lens itself identical ?

I'd really appreciate your help, I'm 'googled' out.

my understanding from palmer's and from viewing unrestored bikes is that late '55 and up use a plastic red lens with a glass tail lamp lens into the mid 60's when both were made plastic.

old dude advertizes as having the red plastic lens http://www.olddude.com/parts.htm they are expensive, but cost less than nice ones i have seen on ebay. clete and bart are very good to do business with and i have always been pleased with the service they provide.

please take a moment to register/log in when you post, otherwise you will have to wait until one of the moderators approve your post. we have to do it this way due to the amount of spam recently.

thanks

I was looking for wire loom the other day and found this site.

http://www.bowtiebits.com/store/store_s ... gory_ID=11

I wondered if these would fit also. I think the 55 part number also was on the later lenses. In 58 the lense should be flat. In later years they descovered a raised lense inside the bezel area gave off more light and was seen better. The raised lense on my 59 is glass, but it is not correct for 59.

My '61 has a plastic red/clear glass. Bought it in '75 and assume that it was the original combo. Tried changing to a red glass, but the "ruby red" look was definitely not as bright as the plastic lens. Since that's my only rear facing light at night, the brighter the better!

A 58 would have a plastic door lens and a glass outlook lens. The door lens is almost flat, the deeper lens is for 69 and later.

Also the glass outlook lens is flat, with the later ones sticking up more at the edges on each side. I think if you go to the AMCA forum site, and look under Panheads, I had a post on there a while ago, that showed the two.

Thanks for the answers.
I shall now look for the flat lens (red) and glass window.

The repl. lens from Old Dude looks like some of the original lenses, but not all. If the AMCA website has the thread about -55 taillamps visible, read it. It lists the differences between 55 & 69 lenses and bodies.
