ignition switch/ wiring trouble and pics of the new pan

#1

Post by lovestory » Wed Apr 07, 2010 11:31 pm

hey guys,
new guy here from Vancouver
Just picked up a 52fl, this site seems great (ill post some pictures a little later)

anyways, having some wiring issues and have a cpl questions.
The ignition switch is aftermarket with 6 posts, will having 6 posts rather than 5 be an issue?
I have gone through the wiring diagram and here is where I am at,
when I turn the ignition one click to the right It will not start (kills the bike when I start it on the second position) I have tail light and speedo light.

When I turn the ignition 2 clicks over I have headlight, no tailight, idiot lights and the bike will start. Now heres the kicker when I was going through the wires one of the red wires to post 2 acts as my tailight in position 1 and my oil light in position 2..?? all the wires from the switch are hooked up as per the diagram..

am I beating my head on a brick wall with this 6 post switch?

sorry for coming in like a hurricane with all these questions, if anyone could help I would really appreciate it!
cheers
Mark

Mark,
Welcome to the forum! lots of good information here, take some time and look around.

Your 6-pole ignition switch is a later model, they came out in the mid seventies on the shovelheads. Two sets of the terminals were usually tied together to make it work like a 5-pole. You need to find a wiring diagram for something like a 1976 FL and study it to see how to tie the terminals together with jumper wires and to see which terminals should be connected to the ignition and lighting circuits.

Here is a 1976 diagram but it is kind of small and may not be much help. I'll look in my stuff and see if I can find something better for you.

That pan is COOLIO! Great catch. What tires are on it and do you have any cornering clearance issues with them? Again, I love the bike and thanks for the pics.

I have made two schematics,(hope I spelled that right ), for both of my Pan's using the newer electronic switches & I believe they are both are six pole switches. I could scan the one for kick start only ,if ya want . The other is for electric leg.

Nice bike !

fourthgear, thanks for the offer man but I swapped out the 6 post with an old 5 post switch. Wiring seems to be dialed in now, but I appreciate the offer

If that switch is a period HD one, it isn't keyed from the factory. A screwdriver, etc will turn the center.

for what its worth i tried to use a 6 post switch on my 64 and the shroud that goes around the lites in the dash hit the 6th post so i couldnt get the dash to fit right. i went back to the 5 post when i found one. not a big deal i suppose but something to watch out for.
edit- lovestory, nice pan.

Just snip that one off , I like the new electronic type ,smooth switching & no mtr studder upon switching . You can switch fast or slow ,doesn't matter.
