'49 Panhead clutch

Hello........New guy here, with a new to me '49 panhead. I finally pried (traded several items) from my brother-in laws hands to get this machine.

I've been wanting this bike ever since I laid eyes on it in '79. He's done a little to the bike but it needs a lot of TLC!
I've welded this...cussed this and that...installed this new part....fixed that old part and I'm loving it all.

Now to my first question. The original 3 1/2 clutch plates are shot. I bought a 4-pack of bonded plates and am wondering if they will work?
Can the pressure plate be used against the first friction disc?
What is the best combination for a clutch pack?

This site is awesome for the old machines......Thanks! :D

I need to add some pics....still trying to figure it out.
I started a new album, but trying to add pics to the post (sigh)

The pressure plate is on the same ten studs as the friction disks, so it won't rub the outside of the first friction disk, that's fine. when you load the disks into the clutch shell start with a friction disk then alternate steel disk friction disk. you'll end up with a friction disk last, then the pressure plate. I believe the stock combination works the best of any I've used . If you don't have a copy of the 48-57 rigid service manual they come in handy!...Mike http://www.ebay.com/itm/Harley-1948-195 ... 3755104%26" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thanks for the tips guys!

This is a real learning experience with this bike and
this very useful web site.

I have more questions... .....but I'll dig a little deeper
into the knowledge base first.
