Question about panhead transmission mainshaft

Does anyone know what the length of the short transmission mainshaft (36-64) should be outside the transmission from the sprocket to the end of it?

Thats a good question . I have a 65 tranny in the frame that I measured and it is showing almost 3 inchs ( just a hair shy of )measurement taken from the outer face of the sproket to end of shaft, being a electric start it should be 12 " long ( if in deed it is of 65-69 mainshaft )and that would make it 1/4 or 3/4 ( could be a post 70 shaft which is 12.5" long)of an inch longer than a nonelectric start. The reason I say if in deed it is a mainshaft of that year is , YOU DON"T KNOW WHAT WAS PUT IN THERE by some one else . I think we all know what I'm saying . I keep good records of all that goes thru my hands into any bike . I'm going to pull that main shaft back out because , now I'm curious and should have measured it when I had it apart for inspection and resealing and the way the whole system looked upon disassembly , I have reason for concern. Hope the measurement helps in some way .

Was that measurement from the out side edge or face of the drive gear to the outer end of the shaft?

Measured from against the outside edge of the main drive gear with sprocket, standard sprocket nut, and sprocket locktab all tight in place, straight out to the tip of the mainshaft.

Makes me wounder whats with mine being three inches from the drive sprocket to end of shaft . I know it should be longer because of it being an electric start, but that would be about 9/16 over your measurement and that does not compute with know shaft sizes , it puts mine in the middle of both electric start shafts, closer to a 70 and up shaft . There could be diff. thickness after market drive sprockets , This one is not stock. I am defiantly going to pull the shaft back out of this tranny to take a good measurement of it . I have to know whats going on with it . I will start a new thread when I get to the starter , they are not much diff. than all the Shovels I've worked on , but this is the first 65 I have worked on . It will be interesting.

I have the box out of my 65 too, I took the measurement for it, at 2 -21/32

I will attach (try) a photo, so you know exactly the place of measurement.

Note : no sprocket on, but I pulled the maindrive gear right out to its limit before taking the measurement. And the maindrive gear is an Andrews.

I feel a little better now , My measurement was 2 22/32 , real close to yours , so I probably have a 65 main shaft in there . Shucks , I wanted to tear the tranny apart again too .(that's a joke , OK ) thanks for the pic's.
