Sprockets

Post by 56pan » Tue Sep 02, 2008 10:38 pm

Hi guys. I don't do very much fast hiway travel with my pan. Mostly putt around on the back roads of western PA. I would like to know the best combination of all the sprockets to give me the best results for this. Right now I have stock engine and tranny sprocket. I have converted to disc brakes and have a 51 tooth rear sprocket. Any help would be appreciated.

56 Pan

I now run a 23tooth engine sprocket and a 25 tooth tranny sprocket the clutch (37 tooth) and rear (51 tooth) being stock. This seems good for highway running and I pull around 2800 rpm on the interstate @ ~65mph. But its a bit "tall" for the average Virginia backroad. I find myself in 3rd a lot.

To calculate overall ratios divide the clutch sproket teeth by the motor sprocket teeth to get the primary ratio. Then divide the rear sproket teeth by the tranny sprocket teeth to get the secondary ratio. Mutilipy the primary by the secondary to get overall ratio. In my case: 37/23=1.61 51/25=2.04 1.61x2.04= 3.28 overall ratio. Stock is 3.74 and I have run as "tall" as 3.02 which made the bike a dog in almost any circumstance. I would recommend something around 3.50 for your riding style.

I would be interested in learning about your disk brake conversion for the front.

Good Luck
