65 Pan tranny main seal

Tranny seal leaked bought new one. Upon removal noticed there was no cork washer behind it as called for in Clymer. Do the new style double lip seals eliminate the washer or is this perhaps the reason for the leak? Is it OK to put one in anyway? Thanks Jazzy Pappy

If you read further in the Clymer Manual, it should mention this.

Yes, the new rubber/metal seal does away with the cork, the washer, and the spring.

You can also install 2 of the new seals for a better seal.

I believe that your talking about the main drive gear seal. They did get rid of this later but if your putting it in a pan it should be there. You may look at your 4th gear bushing as this seems to be the cause of most leaks that I see come from this area.

There is not enough room for two new style (double lip) seals in the case. With one seal and cork washer the seal protudes from the case 1/16" is this OK?

Are you referring to the seal that goes around the clutch pushrod? Or another seal?

Main drive gear oil seal. (behind clutch assy.) Big O seal - not push rod seal.

There will not be enough room for a cork seal under the newer double lip seal (which has to be recessed a little , don't remember how much off the top of my head ). I clean up the recess in the tranny where the seal resides , wipe area with acitone and use RTV sealent around the out side of the seal and wipe off excess after installing seal .Of course as was pointed out , if you have worn or damaged components ( mainshaft, main shaft bushing, main drive bearing ) the seal won't last long.
