I run Redline Heavy Shockproof in all my Harleys. It's a little expensive (about $11 a quart), but since i have been running it I have had zero transmission problems.

What year bike? Harley specs the same oil as the engine uses on older bikes and in 40 years I have never had a problem with motor oil in the trans. And that is in a wide variety of transmissions. In the day we were taught NOT to use Hypoid as it attacked the sulpher bronze bushings and seals. I still go by that and my transmissions love me!

It's for my 62 FLH. I just changed it about a week ago and put 80W90 from the auto parts store in it. Should I change that out?

The 80/90 gear oil won't hurt a thing.

Syrupy oil won't hurt a thing as long as the tranny is loose in the first place.

The MOCO spec'd the same oil as the motor is because the main drive gear rollers are hidden behind a recessed thrust washer, with only endplay clearance for oil to seep in, AND to seep out.
High viscosity lubes can't.

Clean common oil trumps dirty exotic oil.
Who cares if a lube is good for ten times longer, if you have no circulating filter to strain out nasties?
Just change the tranny oil and motor oil at the same time, and the tranny will outlast three motors.
