Correct placement of shift rod on hand shifter

#1

I'm thinking this is a simple question but I've seen it go both ways.
What is the proper mounting position for the trans shift rod to the hand shift lever?
Does it sit on the outside or the inside?
I'm sure either way works but want it installed correctly.

thanks, Jim

Anyone hear of bike night in Lansdale Pa where the entire town is closed off to show @ 10,000 bikes?
