How many clutch disk ?

#1

Post by mcraeav » Fri Jun 11, 2010 10:46 pm

I noticed when I took my clutch apart I had 3 steel disk and 4 fiber disk, which includes the half fiber half steel plate. It looks like this is one less steel and fiber according to the manual. Is it normal to do this?

That is the correct clutch for '41 to '67. The discs changed for '68 to 4 steel and five full double sided fiber without the outer buffer plate.

I believe the 1/2 plate was designed to help absorb/soften the impact of clutch engagement, which in turn in theory at least, should lengthen the life of clutch related components and probably the primary chain....bosheff

I know this is a old thread/ BUT I have guys running 1plate & 1disc less to ease-up on the squeeze of the clutch & the chatter goes away completely/Neautral is easier to find!(All I heard was good-news!). I dont run mine like that/I still can squeeze the hell out of that thingy!---BUT on the mileage part of the deal,THEY havent replaced thier clutches (1 I know of I did was 6yrs. ago now!)---Now the clutches they used were the thicker policebike clutches ,or something similar. I tried the squeeze/ And let me tell you big difference(by alot). I couldnt believe how much less efort it took compared to other bikes!--JUST MY 2 ON the deal------RICHIE

Richie,

I know a fella in Germany, near Wurzburg that has done that to his panhead custom...No mousetrap booster to mess with, and straight hand lever to clucth arm cable....super simple and easy.

Damn lever pull for the clutch is eaiser than my 2000 Electra-Glide.

When I get to the that point of assembly, that is the way that I will be going.
