I use a thread file to clean them up.If the end of the shaft is damaged you can always dress it back a touch and then use the thread file.Try http://www.victornet.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; They do custom taps and dies.

It's cheaper to replace the main shaft?

That's probably why the threads are all buggered. A $20 mainshaft is just that. Price a good quality mainshaft. You could buy 4 or 5 dies for the price of a quality mainshaft. Dress the threads with a thread file. Make yer own thread chaser with a mainshaft nut. Cut 3 grooves the length of the nut equadistant from each other.....bosheff

I don't know what a mainshaft cost these days. If yer gonna spend a bunch of money for junk, spend a little more and score a quality piece....bosheff

Dear Steinauge,
Your right about twenty dollar shafts because $22.95 is the cheapest I can find.

There was a time when they was better than Andrews. They might be Korean now because Dixie supplies all the triedntrue Korean pistons that get reboxed.

R'pectfully,

Dear Steinauge,
So okay thats a 2002 flyer so the sale is over but the regular dealer cost is still the same since 1998 for sure if not since 1985 when I first got a catalog. I shouldna gave that one away but it didn't have a cover like 1969's.

Cost Retail
Chinse Junk $45.00 $75.00
Motor Shop 90.00 135.00
Andrews 135.00 195.00

Recently I've gone though a nightmare with cheap tranny parts. Spend a little more now, get a whole lot late down the road (Thats on the road, not on the side of it).

Na, Harley hasn't sold it for years. They had there squealing chicken brand for a while. If Harley still had it I would guess at least $275.00 plus. Those guys always did like high retail.

bob,

that's what i figured. i haven't set foot in a dealership in years.

on a side note, i took the factory tour many years ago at capitol drive. when i was on the tour the guide said they were tooling up at the time to provide parts for obsolete models.

i guess they never did.
