rear chain free play

#1

Post by il-rigido » Fri Aug 27, 2010 9:01 am

Hi, does anybody can tell me the free play for the rear chain in a '52 frame?
I've seen that both pinion and rear sprocket are good and straight (no loose or tight spot on chain in its motion), but I do not know the correct tightness.
Thanks for your help
Renato

Buongiorno Renato,
Not to be smart but you should have a Panhead repair manual if you own a Panhead for this reason, adjustment specs and procedures.
I roll the bike forward and back then check the chain slack.
It should be aprox 1/2 inch of up and down action between the front and rear sprockets.
This will change as the bike is driven and things warm up. Keep the chain clean and lubed.
The rear chain adjustment coincides with the primary chain adjustment.
Make sure the primary is adjusted properly first then go to the rear chain.
There are also measurements for centering the rear wheel along with adjusting the chain.
It's not always a matter of just turning the rear adjuster screws, it requires a little patience.

YESSSS.....
Thanks a lot.
Usually I keep a little more play on the chain, may be 3/4" - 1", but I was wondering what is the right play for the service manual.
As I said previously my sprocket and pinion are in very good shape and the chain have no tight or loose spots.
Well at this time it's better I go riding a little and check again with warm sprockets.
