Luggage Rack

#1

Post by motorcycleradventurer » Tue Oct 28, 2014 5:19 pm

Does anyone know where I can find luggage rack mounts as shown in the photos? Or know the part number for them? Thanks!

It looks like mirror stem stanchions . What is the OD of the rack rod?

As VPHD said, that is a period aftermarket rack, so there are no part numbers. H-Ds luggage racks from that period were very utilitarian and not very attractive so various brands of aftermarket racks exist.
The factory racks that were available were the fender mount type like this,

The frame mount type like this,

And starting in '52, the 4 bar rack with special bars to fit rigid fenders, different from the later swingarm 4 bar.

Thanks! I got the luggage rack with my '51 but no mounts - I will have to keep my eyes open @ the swap meets.

Not trying to sidetrack this thread, but any chance you have pictures of the difference rigid and Duo? I know the later racks have one set of mounting legs almost vertical. The Duoglide rack legs matched the angle of the bubble bag rack mounting bracket. When I see them on e bay, they are usually listed as 58 to 87 , but I know there are differences.

I should have checked the knowledge base first. But now I wonder if the rack you have in the picture Robbie is the Duo rack. Is it possible the rigid racks appear to have distinct almost even very radiused legs. In the thread listed Flatheadsix says the one on the left is for Duo's when I believe these are the later Electra glide style racks. later in the thread appears a rack on a 55, that is what I would believe is for a rigid. I only believe this because I have a very original 1960 in the garage now that had the rack similar to the one you show on the rigid on it, unless there are more than 3 style mounts. I also had the same rack on my 59 when I got it but now have the later what I believe to be incorrect rack on my bike. So are there 3 or more styles of 3 rail luggage racks?

I thought I read that Harley never put luggage racks on bikes at the factory. Racks were purchases separately and dealers would install them for the customers. Did Harley make the racks?
Also my assumption above about your rack on the rigid, Robbie. I suppose since the Duo's mounted on the outside of the struts there would be a difference in the width of the mounts.

It looks like the mirror mounts could work if i can drill them out a bit.
The luggage rack is 7/16" & the mirror stem is 3/8".

This website is awesome! My wife & I purchased her uncles 1951 FL74 after he passed away. I have found most of the questions I have had by searching the forum & looking through the knowledge base.

A little history @ the 51' - Her uncle purchased it in 1953 after getting out of the service. Between 1953 & 1960 he road it to 20,537 miles. It has been in a barn ever since then. He was a meticulous kind of guy, we found his little black book he kept for maintenance - the last oil change was @ 19,XXX miles in 1959. He had partially taken it apart, but luckily oiled the cylinders. I have been putting it back together as he had it from old photos. I did get it running last week but need to take the carburetor back of again & put a kit in it. He did put a lot of aftermarket stuff on it (Luggage Rack, Chrome Chain Guard, Chrome front wheel disc). He also converted it from a foot clutch/hand shift to hand clutch/foot shift, part of me wants to covert it back the other part of me wants to keep it and ride it just as he did.

I am sure I will come up with more questions & I am looking forward to riding the 51'

I'd like to take a closer look, maybe a different pic of that enclosed chain guard. Had one similar but took it off and put on a stock type from Bob Luland. Good luck replacing the chain when the time comes. And I agree with James, diamond in the rough and sweet ride. Keep us posted.
