"59 style luggage rack

#1

Post by hjans » Fri Mar 06, 2009 5:17 pm

Hi
I want to install a early style luggage rack on my '59 pan.
Unable to find the originals over here ( Holland)
Can anyone post a couple ( or more ) of good and clear pic's, eventually with the correct dimensions ? Trying to fabricate it myself.

Thanks !!

Hans,

Which early style luggage rack do you mean?

Hans,
Do you mean one of these? I may have one for a 58-64 swing-arm frame on the shelf, I could make a pattern if you need it. The bends in the side rails were different from the rigid frame racks but the 3 flat top pieces are the same and still available along with the spacers.

Hjans,
The rack you show with the round rails and fender brackets was never made by H-D. It is an aftermarket rack originally from Comiskey in Chicago. They were made for both Harley-Davidson and Indian. Paughco used to sell a copy of it. I think V-twin also has one. The only factory rack is the one with big flat rails and side mounting.

Hans,
As Robbie mentioned, the racks with the round bars were aftermarket accessories. In the picture I posted above the bike closest to you has the correct factory rack for a Duo-Glide. The second bike is my '49 with the side-mount rack that was first introduced in 1952 for the rigid frame bikes. It is actually incorrect for '49 but I just couldn't make myself drill the 4 holes in the top of the fender to mount one of the earlier racks. The third bike is John's red '55 with the rack you are talking about. As Robbie said, they were available from several sources, still are, and were made in either polished aluminum or chrome plated steel.

If you are restoring your bike for AMCA judging either rack would be correct because they were both available when your '59 was built and accessories will not add or deduct points during judging unless they are totally incorrect (like mine) for the year of manufacture.

hans,

i like mine because my lunch box fits on it perfectly when i take my bike to work!

as mike pointed out it is a horse a piece as far as originality is concerned. run what you like as long as it suits your needs.
