Need help on timing Magneto

#1

I have a '57 FLH panhead with '74 shovelheads on it. It has a Joe Hunt magneto and a kick start. This is my first Harley and it hasn't started in a while so I need some help on where to begin. It had timing issues when it was parked 15 years ago.

First set your points at .016 to .018, I like .016. Bring the front piston up on compression stroke, just after the front intake pushrod goes down, and watch for the timing mark to come up to center of the hole. With the mag retarded , turned clockwise, put a piece of cellophane between the points and turn the mag to full advance, the cellophane should just release at full advance. This should put you right on. You could check it with a timing light after that if you like.

On points ignition , you set timing mark to the rear of the hole-is a mag different?

no it is the same. That will advance the timing a bit if it doesn't ping, then that will work fine, if it starts to ping a bit then you may want to retard it a bit until it stops.
