Top Shock Mount 65/66

#1

Post by old1955 » Fri Jun 17, 2011 12:05 pm

G'day,

Would someone have, the hex size of the top shock mount for a 65, I got to machine a set up.

This is the one with the 1/2 NF thread on the outer end, to screw the top of the crash bar onto.

It was suggested to me (thanks Rod), that this two year only mount, may have been a little larger in hex that most
to support the crash bar setup. They were a bad design at best, I thought.

Any other size or dimensions of the mount gratefully received too.

Do you think they are hardened at all? Tempered?? Or just mild still? They are soft to file.

thanks
Pete

pete, you are right it is a bad design. ive had the stud break at the point of attachment to the shock a couple of times. im at work right now but if my memory serves me correctly they are 1/2 . i will measure them when i get home and give you a definate dimension.

HD service update # 512, May 18, 1965 shows the change from 3/8"stud to 1/2". Pt.# 54515-65, replaces pt.# 54543-54515-58. If you have the safety guards with the old size, they need to be drilled 29/64" and tapped at 1/2-20.

Sorry, I can't get to the bike well enough to measure right now, with the pan underneath the seat blocking me, and the bike in a tight spot. I know there are two lengths of the oem parts. The shorter for the Pans, and the longer for some of the Shovelheads. I found that out when I got a pair from a guy named Bill in PA. who is supposed to "know it all". Well, at least according to him. They were too long, and hit the fender on the inside. I sent them back and he gave me a raft of __it, and never refunded my money. That is all I know right now. Good luck.

Pete , v-twin has the upper rear studs, late 65-66 FL. they worked well for me on my 65.The hex is 3/4 X 3/4.

Folks,

It is my impression that all OEM studs of the era were heat-treated at least.

The 3/8" studs would not have sheared so cleanly if mild,
and tapping them on a lathe is tedious I assure you!
They are as tough as the rest of the machine.

Pete,
Sorry I havn't gotten back to you on the shock stud for the 65. I havn't been able to find it.
My original 54515-58 top studs are made from 13/16 hex, not the 3/4 that the repros are made
off.

Hello Rod,

I was reading this post about the shock studs.

I am restoring a 1958 duo glide. I want to have it back to original.

Now my problem is, i am having studs on it and i dont know if they are original length etc.

Can you give me the length and thread etc of both lower and upper stud?

Thank you very much.

Ruben
