Information on the identification and numbering of frame, motor belly, transmission and other parts

Trying to determine if the factory used casting numbers on all panhead cylinders or not. In question is an early set '48 - '52 and the front cylinder has a casting number, 17-2, while the rear has no casting number. I was told that not all of them had casting numbers, is that true? Palmers book doesn't cover cylinders in depth regarding casting numbers. Thanks to all.
