Dan, you have been doing the right thing, that's for sure. Finding this forum and asking for advice will reap many benefits, now and for years to come.

You haven't mentioned price, but with your knowledge base, and the fact that you are still interested it sound like it must be quite reasonably priced. But based on what we know so far this bike sounds like a bag of worms that would haunt you until you unloaded it on the next poor devil.

My off the cuff advice would be keep looking for a good Pan you can believe in. They are not as uncommon as you might think, if you keep beating the bushes.

I appreciate the input Dave, but I am kind of hard to pull off a project once my mind gets moving on it. lol. Right now my minds obsession is figuring this fiasco out. If nothing else the owner will have a much better understanding of the bike once I'm through. As far as the price goes, it's not that it's the best price out there, just the closest to what I'm looking for at that price point. (10k and under)

Danny,
Not sure what your time is worth, but wasting it on a pile of problems like that seems counterproductive to me. Their are nicer Panhead projects out there all the time. Patience and diligence are your friends!

My '50 came to me with a California VIN tag riveted to the frame, but had a Florida title, with the engine serial number on it.
The previous owner (30years) had taken it to Kali at some point, where they assigned a VIN to the frame and registered it that way.
When the owner brought it to Florida, he was able to re-title it with the original motor number. I'm not certain how he did it, but suspect he probably had old registration certificates showing how it had previously been registered. He was a packrat like me. When I cleaned out the toolbox that I bought with the bike, I found old New York state inspection stickers going back quite a few years prior to the time he left NY.

Definitely check with your state motor vehicle department first, if you hope to do the same.
Best of luck to you, I know what it's like to get fixated on a particular bike when shopping.

Regards,
John

Late 1954 and all 1955 were straight leg frames and if the top motor/gas tank mount is original should be a date code like C-5

Thanks for the input guys. I'll post a pic of the vin to verify the font is proper when I get back to my computer Monday night. I could live with it being titled funny in indiana if I could get a proper title by engine number to accompany the goofy one the state issued. Is there a guide with pictures of the correct letters and numbers used in 55 so I could avoid posting a pic?

Well, I guess I've reached the end of my research on this individual bike. I had someone take a look at the vin stamp on this case and it has definitely been modified at some point and is just not worth the money to purchase and put new cases on it to make it legal. I guess the search is back on for a good Panhead. Thanks for your help everyone. Anybody have a line on a rigid pan or generator shovel in Indiana or NJ?

Smart move, Danny. I've been following this thread hoping you wouldn't make a serious mistake. Keep looking, and be patient. Your motorcycle is out there somewhere, it will find you..!

Dan, you did all the right things. We all know the strong pull a pile of parts can lay on a man!

This pair of gen shovels has been getting a bit of a buzz on the Shovelhead forum.

Perhaps you can make contact and score the whole lot for less than the Pan you were smitten with. If you do, I am in for the sidecar!

Update: After a lot of driving around to see a bunch crappers, I found my bike. Picked it up yesterday, registered it on the way home, gave it a good going over and put some miles on it today. I'm in love. Thanks for all the help on here. I learned a whole lot about pans in short order from the shared knowledge on this forum.

She's a '53, STD heads, wishbone frame w/ sidecar loops intact, 2 gallon Wassel tank, rear juice drum, original 4 speed with one piece kicker. Real strong runner.
