Vise Grips...
Threw these into the saddlebag last fall on a whim.
Worked out nicely today.
I could have made it home by manually operating the mousetrap, but this was so much easier...

Absolutely! Sure been there a few times... Honestly keep bailing wire as well. Remember the old days before cell phones and credit cards-if you broke down, you pushed and hoped for someone with a pickup or finding a payphone.

Well done, however get yourself one of the repair pivots (clamp type) for the cable end. They work well for temporary use and take up very little space.

Re: Vise Grips...
yeah ...that happened to me couple years back . I just kept going ….shifting without the clutch and going thru stop signs and red lights all the way home ... now I check the cable end along with all the other pre-start checks !

Re: Vise Grips...
Also,
I keep a set of hemostats in my tool array.
One time I was going to the European Bike Week in Villach Austria, and my throttle cable broke......... I was able to use the hemostats to make a "thumb actuated" throttle lever.........I was on my E-glide, and once I got to speed, I set the cruise control...it got me to the tech-tent to get another cable.
Thanks..
George

Great temporary fix to get you home. I'm thinking I need to add that to my travel bag. Love the old school 3/4 helmet too!

Re: Vise Grips...
I saw my brother in law's shifter lever cartwheel into the ditch, pulled over and looked for it for a spell, then I realized I could borrow him the heel shifter off my bagger to get him home. The vice grips would have worked as well if he was out by himself. Good all purpose tool to have in the bag, just a medium sized one is all you'd ever need...
Re: Vise Grips...
Vise grips are certainly a must carry tool. I keep them in my tour pak, and it has been my experience if you don't keep them in the clamped down position while riding, eventually the adjustment screw will work itself completely out due to vibration. Yep.
That being said, I also carry a spare clutch cable in the tour pak as well....just in case.
