I had looked at the oil filter arrangements in the parts catalog area and found a few different numbers, I would like to know the part number I should be looking for when replacing the external oil filter on a 58 Panhead, also if you have a seal kit number available too that would be great, I'll take original factory numbers or manufacturer brand numbers too. I've tried looking at a few parts websites and they first tell me "this part fits your 1958 Panhead", but then I check into the details and it says it's a replacement for the factory in-tank oil filter and haven't been able to find one specifically stating for use in external oil filters.

Are you talking about the factory canister type external filter or an aftermarket external filter?

Yes it's the factory canister type, I found 2 listings in the V-Twin catalog that actually states it's use for the factory canister, one was a replica mesh type and the other the metal perforated with a paper filter within, are either of these 2 filters better than the other? I know the metal-paper filter is an newer design but is it really any better than the older mesh type? Are there any other filters available from other companies out there?

Some of the aftermarket filters are made from fiberglass, which comes apart when you touch it. For this reason, I always use paper.

+1 for the paper filter. It comes with built-in end caps. Ensure to install it the right way up and secure with a self-locking nut.
I dissected my last one to see what it had caught so I can attest to how tough and well made they are. For this reason I plan to extend the expected life of the filter to at least double what I'd originally thought.

As for the gaskets, https://www.ebay.com/itm/Panhead-CANIST ... SwXq5ZrqlV however I recall the larger gasket is the same as a Linkert bowl gasket.
It seems like a lot of money for washers...!?

To use an original style "horsehair" element you'd need to have both original end caps 63846-48 & 63843-48
