M 74B Linkert choke

I need to change from the stock choke set up on my panhead project. I found this one but here is the description. Will this work on my M74b and allow me to use my choke disk, and is the cam on the end of the shaft going to function as my original shaft cam does?

This kit was designed to replace those on Harley Linkert carburetors found on Flathead (Side Valve) engines. This would include 45" solo and servi-car as well as Big Twin Flathead U, UL, ULH. This kit includes the disc, lever, shaft and screws. The disc is 1.665" diameter with a .27' small hole. The zinc plated lever is the longer type that will accommodate the 7" air cleaner.

Panhead and UL use same air cleaner, it may work.

It will work fine on your M74, the cam is the same function, however your disc with the spring plate will not work on that slotted shaft unless you cut a section out of the shaft. Otherwise you will need to use the disc they supply which is the earlier type. It may slightly alter your starting technique.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I will move forward and will plan on ccutting out the back of the slot if I can use my disk.

I did this conversion last week, pics below, only thing that is different from stock besides the lever is the orientation of the screws that hold the choke plate on the shaft; these are now facing up when open or inwards when closed (depends on how you want the lever to be orientated when open/closed next to the air cleaner).

I do want to run my spring plate choke disk. After looking at mine last night, the screw holes are further apart to clear the spring disk. I dont think I can do this with the shaft in this kit even if I cut part of the shaft out now. Thanks Sarre. Id like to know what might change running the choke plate with the hole vs the spring disc.

I've already asked around, since I also went from the spring loaded disc to the plain hole. It's thought to let more air in (and thus fuel) while choked which should lead to better starting since the spring loaded is thought to be a bit to restrictive for the FL, but can't confirm that myself yet since this carb is still on the workbench.

Why can't you just change the lever and leave the rest alone?

W&W Cycles has this lever that I intend to get for my WL/KH engine and I have already mounted a M-74B on the manifold.

Seems like it would be simpler than messing around with the choke lever and such.

Because the end of the choke shaft is different, so the lever does not fit.

Sarre,

Is the choke shaft larger in diameter or smaller?

I assume that is what your referring to, correct?

Wouldn't the size of the choke shaft be determined by the bore through the side of the carb's body?

The "L" shaped choke lever is designed to attach via a set screw with a tit on it to lock the shaft( all Linkert choke shafts are the same diameter) to it. A choke shaft for any OHV with a pull rod choke has a threaded end with a stepped plate attached to contact the indent ball. Consequently there is no shaft protruding with the appropriate indexed hole to be able to attach the "L" choke handle (which incorporates it's own index plate) on an OHV shaft. So in order to adapt it the entire shaft must be changed. And no SV type shaft was ever made to be able to use the spring plate choke disc. Hence the origin of this thread.
