Oil and clutch disks

#1

Post by Dot Heton » Sat May 12, 2018 3:30 am

I’ve only ridden my bike once a few years ago. I made a trip of a couple miles and after i couldn’t turn over the motor by kicking, it just seemed to slip when kicking. But it did turn over when pushed.

Im now taking it apart, the disks are soaked with oil. They look new but are at least 40 years old. Do these work in oil?

With the chain oiler won’t they always get soaked?

I can move the shaft up and down a bit and the seal looks bad. How do I fix this to keep oil from coming out?

Exactly how much play does the shaft have?
If it's more than 0.05" and leakage is excessive, you'll need to remove the gearbox and overhaul it (install bigger needle rollers).

If the seal goes bad, the oil is slung away by the back of the clutch hub and won't faul the plates.
Same goes for the chain oil.

If the plates are soaked, wash them in a solvent.
If they're too old and brittle replace the linings..

The gearbox seal can be replaced from the outside with the box in situ.

is The clutch hub nut right or left thread? My book doesn’t say.

Right hand thread on all 45s, left hand on Big Twins.

Never mind. The book says it’s right hand thread, but it’s not in the text, it’s in the caption of a picture. I’ve almost finished my homemade tool to remove this joker.
