Early vs Late Tappet Blocks

I'm gathering parts to build a early panhead motor. I have a 49 right case and am planning to use solid lifters. Can I use the late style lifter blocks or will I have to use the early style?

You can use the later lifter blocks on your project.

Thanks for the reply. As I don't have the lifters or push rods then I should be okay getting a aftermarket complete solid lifter kit?

Solid lifters will be mandatory as the 1953 and older right hand, timing side, cases were not drilled to feed oil to the lifter blocks. But I suppose a "good" mechanic could drill to intercept the oil paths going to feed the heads, but that is probably a REALLY BAD idea to attempt that mod.....RooDog

I'm not a "bad" mechanic but I don't think I'll be drilling on the cases. I think that while I don't have any of the original parts for the lifters the solids are the way to go.

The point is that any Panhead or Shovelhead lifter blocks will work, there is just no pressurized oil supply in the motor case to the lifter blocks, so solids are necessary. The original Pannies , 1948-52, use solid, adjustable lifters with hydraulic pushrods. The hydraulics were in the top end of the PRs and were fed oil from the rocker arm. Hydraulic lifter were introduced in the lifter blocks in 1953. You should have no problems with solid lifters other than a little noise, but, hey, it's a Harley, not a sewing machine....Enjoy it....RooDog

Okay so I got a used set of what I believe are aftermarket tappet blocks. Now that I'm looking them over something seem wrong with the front exhaust guide. It looks like it's bored in the wrong place? I have looked at other images and it looks like other tappet blocks are not perfectly centered? I don't have a cam shaft or lifters yet to see how they line up so maybe it's correct.

Those look like EVO blocks, not Pan or Shovel.

Those are def. EVO blocks.I used steel blocks in my 52. I had to grind a bit of the case due to a casting seam. I suppose you could file the block if you have this issue,it wasn't much that had to be removed.

Isn’t the purpose of the offset is to correct the tappet to rocker arm geometry?
Especially the front cylinder exhaust? The aftermarket tappet guides for pans have this offset, at least the ones sold by Drag Specialties.

Yes, If your lifters will fit in the bore.If so they are after market.They certainly look to be EVO but the bore on them looks too small to be EVO.

With that offset hole make sure whatever lifters you are using do not interfere with the lower end of the pushrod cover. There needs to be clearance at full lift between the two.

Also be aware that these aftermarket lifter blocks have flat bottomed, counter bored/spotfaced, screw holes and will not work well with the original 1/4-28 countersunk,tapered, original style screws. The aftermarket suppliers, such as Colony, have the correct screws you should use with these blocks...... RooDog

Sorry, Fellas....The original lifter block screws are countersunk 1/4-24, not 1/4-28.....Doh !! RooDog
