1955 FLH left side gas tank leaking.

#1

Post by Redspanheads » Thu Jun 14, 2018 5:25 pm

I have a 1955 FLH and the left side tank is leaking around a seem on the bottom. Also the tank was repaired (brazed) sometime in the past on the bottom as well. I assume due to rust pinholes. I would rather not go with the tank sealer method as it still has some old sealer in it and I don't like the stuff. Is there anyone out there that can repair the tank by welding new section on the bottom or something like that. It is original and has the hand shift bracket mounts on the side so would really love to keep it.

I would also consider another tank if it was original, with shift bracket mounts, etc.

Thanks, Craig

Moyer Fuel Tank Renu in Greensburg, PA repairs all kinds of gas tanks.

I have no experience with them but was looking for the same thing for my '42 Flathead.

I'll have to call them. Anyone have a 55' left side tank kicking around? Anyone know what years are same as 55'?

Thanks

Only '55 and '56 are the same, however if you are just cutting a chunk out of the bottom of one, any '48-'64 hand or foot shift with serious upper damage would be a donor.

Photos? How bad is the rust inside? The project sounds like it could turn into major work ($). I don't like sealers either, but sometimes it's the most sensible method.

I don't recommend welding or brazing on any gas tank. (I've did it a number of times but take EVERY precaution in the book to keep my head attached to my body!) What I generally do for pin holes or minor leaks is thoroughly clean the tank internally and use two part catalyst paint to seal. I understand O'reillys Auto parts carries it now.(for fuel tanks) My experience with "sealers" has been all bad. (my wife and I nearly lost our lives on a dark night when my 1955 Cadillac gas tank outlet totally clogged with sealant....in the middle of an unlighted bridge with no where to pull over!....and that tank was done in a shop by pros!) I also failed with "sealant" on a 65pan....and trust me, I followed application instructions perfectly. I used the two part epoxy paint on my 58pan 20yrs or so ago and it's still good......walt....tulsa,ok

Thanks for the reply. The tank is currently on its was to Moyers gas tank Renu in Greensburg Pa. Hopefully it comes back in working order. As it is now it is not usable so we will see. I will update the thread when it's finished in case anyone else runs into the same issues. Thanks CC Rider for the info. It was what i felt was my best option.

My tanks leaked years ago around the studs at the rear of the tank and there were hairline cracks I had someone tig weld around the bosses for the studs. Then he followed the hairline cracks and fixed those leaks. On an 81 shovelhead gas tank, someone tried brazing a hole . It ended up being the size of a quarter. Took the tank to the same welder and he fixed the tank. No leaks.

..... Take your tanks to a good Tig welder.

Craig, keep us updated about your tank. I have talked to Moyer about my 42' WLA oil tank. Looking forward to hearing about your results.
