Changing a throttle cable 54 style

Hello everyone. My buddy is trying to change his outer throttle cable on his 54 and later style handlebars and has hit a snag. The replacement cable comes with what I would call a spool on one end. I am assuming you threat the non spool end in though the handle bar end of the handlebars so the spool is hidden inside the bars. Must act as a retaining feature I guess. But how is the spool retained? Or have I got this thing all wrong? I can't find a diagram on the net anywhere. Thank you ! Joe

There is a set screw on the bottom of the bars that retains the spool.

That's where a repair manual comes in handy
