“L” Shaped top motor mount

Post by Gotnoclass » Sat Nov 03, 2018 6:27 am

Hi guys, I have a dumb question. Can somebody explain the reason for the L shaped mound?
I understand the slot being oval, but why does it make a downward return? I cannot envision that portion ever being ever utilized.

As Larry stated, the "L" slot dates back to the days of two different engine types and three heights using the same frame although it appeared after Knuckle production ended on the '48 frame. However the FL, EL , and U series all hit the tab in different locations and all were using the same frame. And as with many things H-D they would no longer supply an earlier part as a replacement item once a new one took its place so parts were designed to retro fit earlier models.
