Something else I’m wondering about is the possibility of differences in casting number characters. I think the next cover is H-D and although it is 1937-39, as opposed to 1940-48, I’m using it because it shows more clearly what I’m looking for. Notice the top of the 1s.

I’ve seen the same thing in the top serif of 1s in casting numbers on other H-D parts but for one reason or another it’s not always very clear. However, the effect is visible on the Knuckle and Pan crankcases below.

But it’s hard to tell from your picture if your 1s are like that. Are they? If so, could you compare them with 1s on AM gear covers.

These are examples of V-twin brand AM covers. The early repo has the indention by the pipe where as the ribbed doesn't.

Thanks for this close-up. When compared to the 1s in the 131 37 H-D cover I posted the 1s in this V-Twin casting number don’t look good.

I’ve only got photos of a few early H-D covers though because I was mostly interested in date codes and H-D BT Flathead gear covers (37-39 and 40-48) don’t seem to have them.

Also notice to secure the oil separator seal ring this V-Twin cover looks like it has screws (?) whereas H-D covers (37-39 and 40-48) had pins (H-D #585-37B). But the 40-48 V-Twin cover looks to have pins.

It’s interesting this 37-39 style V-Twin cover has the indent at the bottom edge but the V-Twin 40-48 cover doesn’t. Why wouldn’t they be the same as each other, either both having it or both not having it?

After taking a closer look at my cover the "1"'s
look like yours. Also I noticed that the "0" on OEM cast numbers have a pimple in the middle. I didn't notice on the VTwin

Here are some pics of some UL cam covers that I have. The first is an NOS military green cam cover. The second cover came off of my 1939 U model The others are used '40-'48 covers.
