Greetings Men. Did early sportys come with aluminum gennys? Picked up what appears to be a 12v genny. Both end caps are solid aluminum and main body ( where feild coils are bolted to) has a steel inner sleeve with an aluminum outer shell. Dont know if it works yet.never seen one before. I like it. Thinking of running it in my 63 chop. One of the end caps has MOTOR SPORT on it. Anyone know anything about these? Thanks

Late type 2 brush 12V generators had aluminum end caps, but the main body remained iron. It is considered an important piece of the pole shoe assembly.

Here's a pic of the 65-B late Sportster Hitachi genny. All steel/iron except for the brush end aluminum end cao which carries a nice ball bearing package. It uses a fined aluminum solid state regulator which looks just like a mid production Shovelhead/Evo regulator...

Never seen one built like you describe, but no reason it shouldn't work. The iron liner will aid the flow of magnetic flux through the gap between the pole shoes that the armature turns in. The sleeve provides a more permeable magnetic path between the back sides of the pole shoes than air or aluminum would provide. Should provide roughly the same efficiency as the iron oem center section. Besides, you can polish the whole assembly and make it shiny, a big plus on a chopper!
