Any idea what the screw type is on gear cover?

ULH GEAR COVER / TAPPET GUIDE SCREWS

I went to chase the tappet block screw holes today and discovered that the screw holes were not 1/4" × 20 or 1/4 × 24 threads. I tested the gear cover holes and they are the same as the block holes. Any idea what the spec is for these odd ducks ? Thanks

Correction, I meant I tried both my 1/4 × 20 and 1/4× 28 taps. I did not have a 24 tap.

Factory screws are all 1/4-24 into the cases. That included oil pump studs, timer base, tappet guides, cam cover, relay mount.

I tried the block screws in the cover holes and they are the same thread. Both are not the common 20 or 28 count thread. I took the screw to the hardware store and tested it in their reference display but they didn't have any thing other than the 20 or 28 thread

V-Twin, Tedd Cycle, should have bot 1/4-20 taps and dies. Also, I just looked, eBay has many of them listed for less that $10 bucks......A great source for uncommon tools you'll not find at your local hardware store, or Fastenal either.....

I called a local auto machine shop to try a source a set, he gave me the " I've been doing this a long time and I've never heard of that , are you sure" line. He is a nice guy so it is what it is. Most times you don't argue or even worse, try to teach a ol'dog new tricks. I call the another fab machine shop and they had a tap but will have to order a die. Not a big rush so perfect. I bought the extended set of Irwin tap and die previously so I thought I had everything covered. They are invaluable for chasing holes and chromed bolts. Thanks again for the information, Brian

McMaster-Carr has both taps and dies in 1/4-24. They will most likely be better quality than Vtwin.

Thanks for the link. I saw the V-twin set on Ebay. I thought it said about $100! I bought a Alfa tap and Irwin die . It's on the way.
