ULH GEAR COVER / TAPPET GUIDE SCREWS

#1

Post by Holtvintage » Sun Jan 13, 2019 5:23 pm

I went to chase the tappet block screw holes today and discovered that the screw holes were not 1/4" × 20 or 1/4 × 24 threads. I tested the gear cover holes and they are the same as the block holes. Any idea what the spec is for these odd ducks ? Thanks

Correction, I meant I tried both my 1/4 × 20 and 1/4× 28 taps. I did not have a 24 tap.

Factory screws are all 1/4-24 into the cases. That included oil pump studs, timer base, tappet guides, cam cover, relay mount.

I tried the block screws in the cover holes and they are the same thread. Both are not the common 20 or 28 count thread. I took the screw to the hardware store and tested it in their reference display but they didn't have any thing other than the 20 or 28 thread

Awesome, thanks. Looks like I'm shopping for the 24 tap. Thanks again for the quick reply

V-Twin, Tedd Cycle, should have bot 1/4-20 taps and dies. Also, I just looked, eBay has many of them listed for less that $10 bucks......A great source for uncommon tools you'll not find at your local hardware store, or Fastenal either.....

I called a local auto machine shop to try a source a set, he gave me the " I've been doing this a long time and I've never heard of that , are you sure" line. He is a nice guy so it is what it is. Most times you don't argue or even worse, try to teach a ol'dog new tricks. I call the another fab machine shop and they had a tap but will have to order a die. Not a big rush so perfect. I bought the extended set of Irwin tap and die previously so I thought I had everything covered. They are invaluable for chasing holes and chromed bolts. Thanks again for the information, Brian

Maybe I should proofread my post BEFORE I hit submit. But yes, as you might have guessed, I am uneducated and I will just blame my grammar on typing on my phone ;)

McMaster-Carr has both taps and dies in 1/4-24. They will most likely be better quality than Vtwin.

Thanks for the link. I saw the V-twin set on Ebay. I thought it said about $100! I bought a Alfa tap and Irwin die . It's on the way.
