Why hone before you buy tappets, if they do not clean up perfect still will be better than what you have? If you would want me to fit oversize tappets I need the ones you are going to use, not some measurement of what someone says they are!
I can understand that. I agree part in hand is always better than "suppose to be" dimensions

I bought some .005 oversized tappets from Eastern the other day. When I checked with the micrometer I found that several were .7350 to .7355 in diameter. Is this typical? I thought that they should be a little more symmetrical. I have 1 that is within .0002 so I know its possible. Am i being too picky? The hone to fit dimension is only .001

Someone on this GREAT board once replied to my Ul lifter dilema. They informed me that ironhead sportster lifters are the same dimensions as flathead lifters. They were right. I found some NOS on ebay. They came without adjuster screws. I think there are two different thread pitches for the adjusters. I was informed by a knowledgeable member of this board that the holes in flathead lifters have nothing to do with oiling. Ironhead lifters are easily available and they work fine in a flathead engine. But I also have Eastern products in my engine with no issues.

All 1929-83 tappets are .731" diameter with .855" wheels.
AFAIK all of the adjusters interchange, flat hex, ball cup etc.
The lengths vary a lot, XL is very short, knuck the opposite. If it's too tall you won't be able to install them.
The tappet blocks are part of the oil system (holes vent through the crankcase wall), not the tappets.
