I'm trying to find out how many ELs & Fls were produced in each year from 1941 to 1947, the Knowledge base doesn't list them.

I was actually only interested in how many 1942 Els were produced.

HAHa, you should have asked that.

According to both "The Legend Begins" and the "H-D Data Book" the same figures are shown. Keep in mind these are not definites as the factory did not keep true records.
EL 620
ES 164 (the number boss will just show "E")
ELA 8 (Test bikes for the Army)
ELC 45 (Canadian Defense Bikes)

I doubt that anyone knows how many 1942 ELs were produced.

Pages 199-227 of The Legend Begins contain some production figures and model descriptions for 1969-earlier. However, page 198 states: ‘We are passing this information along to our enthusiasts as a matter of interest, and it is not to be regarded as totally accurate.’

It is unclear how Legend production figures were calculated. Calendar year? Model year? Bruce Palmer says they were compiled in 1978 by H-D employee Midge Kimbell but in 1994 she told him that when the list was prepared some records were missing. She also said the list was made as a quick project and the numbers were not double checked.

As for 1942 it is one of the worst years as far as Legend records are concerned. For example, there are two different amounts of WLAs, two different amounts of WLCs and two different amounts of XAs. Are any of those six amounts correct? The only figure given for ELs is 620 but how would anyone know if it is true or not? No-one at H-D addressed the problem with the WLAs, WLCs and XAs so I think all Legend figures remain suspect. And although Legend lists the ELs and other models under year 1942, it is unclear whether it means calendar year or model year.

How about 42FLs

Page 204 in The Legend Begins says 799 FLs for 1942. But are those 799 all 1942 models? Or are some of them 1943 models that were made in 1942? This is part of the problem with Legend figures because although the 799 FLs are listed under year 1942, it is unclear whether it means calendar year or model year.

Some authentic-looking serial numbers don’t comply with alleged production figures in Legend. And the same goes for alleged production amounts in a few other publications I have copies of. Are you concerned about any 1942 Knucklehead serial number(s) in particular?
