BB...
Let's not forget to place a thin flat washer on those studs before installing the top engine bracket. They are a factory upgrade spec'd for Shovelheads, but make sense for Pannys too....

Sam....
The MoCo deemed it so for the 1966 and newer Shovels. Harley part number 6516HW. It could just be a spacer, maybe, I have seen a lot of heads that were impressed from the bracket being in direct contact with the aluminum head. May just be natural, or the result of the bracket ,stud & nut not being properly torqued. It could just be a spacer, maybe, but in any case, it seems to make sense to me, so I use thin stainless washers between the head and the top bracket on all my builds, even my Big Red Evo....
Sam, this is something I have been doing ever sinse I got in the Harley game. Looking to the newer models for upgrades that I can retrofit to my older bikes, like the piston pins and keepers, molly top rings and three piece oil control rings, 12Volt electrics, foot shifts, electronic iggys, Bendix carb for a Panny. Sorry fellas, but stock has just never been my bag, and used parts to do these upgrades are often way cheap, like my $27 Bendix that started on it's very first kick while I was just simply test fitting things.... And this, to me , is the magic of any pre-Twinkie Harley
